Fluoride Treatment

What is Fluoride and why is it important?

Fluoride is a natural mineral that restores the minerals to tooth enamel and prevents harmful bacteria from building up in your mouth, thereby preventing cavities. Fluoride Treatment is recommended to strengthen your teeth. It is available in two forms: systemic and topical. Topical includes fluoride toothpastes and mouth rinses as well as fluoride treatments at the dentist. Systemic includes water and dietary supplements.

How Does FLUORIDE Treatment Strengthen Your Teeth?

When fluoride reaches your teeth, the enamel absorbs it and helps repair it by replenishing the lost calcium and phosphorous, thereby strengthening your teeth. It helps prevent tooth decay.  Even with topical and systemic fluoride intake, a professional fluoride treatment at your dentist can help further since the fluoride preparation used at the dentist is a much stronger concentration that that available in toothpastes or mouth-rinses

The risk of cavities may increase with the following:

  • Excessive drug or alcohol use
  • Eating disorders
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Lack of professional dental care
  • Poor diet
  • Dry mouth or decreased saliva
  • Weak enamel

You can prevent dental caries or tooth decay by following good oral hygiene habits like brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing. However, to keep your teeth healthy, it is important to have regular dental examinations and cleanings.

How much Fluoride do you require?

For children under 3 years, you need to apply only a thin layer of fluoride toothpaste to their toothbrush covering not more than half of the bristles.  For children aged between 3 and 6 years, fluoride toothpaste the size of a pea is recommended. You must ensure that they spit out the toothpaste while brushing.

How often should I get a Fluoride treatment?

It is recommended that you get a professional fluoride treatment at your dentist’s every 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on your oral health. Fluoride treatment is especially helpful if you’re more susceptible to developing dental caries or cavities.

If you are at high risk for cavities, your dentist may also prescribe a special fluoride rinse or gel to use regularly at home.

    • After the treatment, you may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes so as to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride and help repair your tooth enamel.
